Gas

Just curious. With a 1.8l turbo chipped, is there any brand of gas that will out perfom others? I use chevron a lot but what about BP or Citgo? I dont use exxon because of their enviromental record and attitude. I am finding that my combined driving gas mileage is about 20 mpg. That is combined highway and city driving. I usually fill up my tank when I get to the red bars on the fuel gauge because I dont trust the readings I am seeing. I get about 250 to 275 miles a tank. Granted, having a roof rack on my wagon will knock some mileage off but I think I should be doing better. I have run an industrial strength injector cleaner through the motor and no effect. Airfilter is clean and the tire pressures are at 31 psi. The car has been really stable once I replaced the MAF sensor, connector wire and connector. In the words of Aristocrats Tech, it is as fast as hell.

Do I need to run the most expensive gas-octane 93?

I welcome your thoughts. As time goes buy I am liking this car a lot more inspite of its high maintenance cost price tag.

Hello Elliot,

here in Europe/Austria most of the 1.8T runs 98 octane or 100 octane :) The higer the octane rate, the better the yield of the performance.

Thank you for your comment. Actually, I was wrong when I said the industrial strength injector cleaner did nothing. After I refilled the tank with BP 93 octain, my car runs better and I notice my miles driven relative to the gas gauge needle position has increased. I run the 93 most of the time but occasionally I would like to save a few bucks so I would run the midgrade of 89. I think I will make it a habit of running the injector cleaner once a month. I appreciate your time and interest.

Hello Ali: 98 or 100 octane? Are you using airplane gas? Cant get that high of a octane rating here that I know of. We only go to 93. What kind of mileage do you get? What do you have for wheels? I am just curious. Since I finally finished my rebuilding program, the last being the MAF sensor, connector wire and connector, the car has settled down. All I do now is Amsoil oil changes and gas. Its nice not to have a car that just financially bleeds one dry.
Nice chatting with you. Try to keep the number of speeding tickets down. Elliot

Union 76 offers a 100+ rated race fuel, but it is extremely expensive.

Some people like to add tolulene to their tanks to boost the octane levels, but this can be very dangerous and should be done in very small amounts if done at all.
