V.W. MFA . Readings&Chipping

I used to own a B4 TDI Passat which was fitted with an Alpin Tuning Module,it was a good conversion, but made the MFA MPG readout very optimistic. What is the reason this happens and would it occur with the Upsolute conversion on my Bora130 PD?

The tuning box (module) is a simple plug in device. It is connected between the ECU and the injection system (and gets also a signal from the MAF). The operation is quite simple. It simply fakes the signals between the injection and the ECU and causes the ECU to richen up the amount of diesel.
A tuning chip is a completely different story, eaven if this boxes are also claimed as 'chiptuning' which really hurts in the heart of a 'real' chiptuner.
The main differences are:
Box: Only raises the amount of fuel by faking the signal from the injection to the ECU. The power usually comes verry rough and the cars tend to smoke. The point when the additional fuel and the amount itselve can be controlled. The result is most likely a good powerincrease, with visible smoke, and rough sensitive throttle. No or verry bad linear power increase (full throttle - full power, 1/2 throttle - stock power)...
Advantage: simple to install, can be used on every car with the 'same' engine
Tuningchip:
The OEM software in the ECU is adapted. This means, that the modification is done directly where it is done by the Car manufacture. This enables to get control of all the different settings of the engine, like injection, injection pressure, advance, turbo... The result is a very linear power increase, the car will feel like a stock engine, but much stronger, with only verry minor or not more smoke than the OEM version (in some applications eaven less smoke). The OEM software will be used to develop the program, so all 'limp mode' and safty features of the ECU are kept, and the upgrade is not detectable.
Disadvantage (is it really one?): This chip is especially made for your car/engine combination, and can not be used in another car.
I do not want to blame the tuning boxes, we are also offering them, but the difference is quite noticeable. I normaly explain it like: The box feels like a bull, strong but verry rough, the tuning chip feel like a tiger, smooth, fast and strong :D
So to answer your question, it's normal that the tuning boxes have not so good results at the MPG and smoke levels, cause only the injection is raised, the chip will not cause this disadvantages, cause all different values are optimized, to raise the MPG and reduce the smoke. To get a good 'burn' turbopressure, injection, and advance needs to be optimized...
I know this is a long posting, but the box/chip discussion is really a sensible theme...
